Scientology Volunteer MInisters Help After Philippines Typhoons

In the last year Volunteer Ministers of the Church of Scientology have helped over 200,000 of people in the Philippines who were affected by typhoons.

Typhoon Rammasun left 82 people dead and 40,000 homes destroyed. Then came Typhoon Hagupit in December, pounding the Philippines islands for three days and leaving more death and destruction.

The Church of Scientology Volunteer Ministers were on the ground after th typhoons hit providing anything needed—food, water, clothing, tents, a kind word, and, of course, what the Volunteer Ministers are most known for—Scientology assists, simple procedures to alleviate the spiritual component of physical pain, shock or emotional trauma. Volunteer Ministers give these assists to anyone in need, and teach them to anyone who wants to help another.

They first coordinated with other relief groups and local officials to determine the greatest need, and they went to work. They traveled 340 miles by boat, bicycle, trolley and any other conveyance at hand to reach remote, hard-hit areas. They organized food and water and got it into the hands of those who needed it. They helped residents clean up their homes—or helped them search in the rubble of a fallen house for cherished family possessions.

In a tent city set up for the newly homeless, the Volunteer Ministers set about helping dazed and frightened children. They fed them, played games, sang songs, and gave assists to help them recover from the shock of the disaster, bringing smiles to the faces of 2,000 children in one camp. In another, they distributed relief goods to over 4,000 families and gave hundreds of assists.

John Travolta Flies Help to Haiti

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

NBC reported Monday that John Travolta would be flying aid to Haiti.

“The earthquake in Haiti has brought out all types of doctors, relief workers, celbrities and pilots. John Travolta fits most of those requirements. The avid flier is expected to hop on his personal Qantas 707 and pilot his family, 24 doctors, and ministers from the Scientologist church to Haiti to help in the relief effort. The plane, which will leave from Florida tonight, will also be carrying much-needed medical supplies for the thousands of Haitians still nursing devastating injuries.”

The actor and leading Scientologist flew his own Boeing 707 to the capital, Port-au-Prince, and helped unload six tons of ready-to-eat military rations and medical supplies. “We have the ability to actually help make a difference in the situation in Haiti and I just can’t see not using this plane to help,” said Travolta, (Source: Haitifeed.com)

Travolta was met by a team of Volunteer Ministers who are already in Haiti assisting victims of the earthquake.

One of the community programs we’re most proud of is our Volunteer Ministers (VMs). They help out locally and internationally. Our Pasadena VMs worked at the California fires in the San Gabriel Valley recently.

In December 2007 a team of seven Scientology Volunteer Ministers traveled to Uganda to help flood victims. More than 300,000 people were displaced, their food crops and livestock destroyed by the effects of months of heavy rain.

One team just flew in to Myanmar to work with other relief organizations after the cyclone. The official death toll nearly doubled to 78,000 as heavy rains lashed much of the area stricken two weeks ago, further hampering relief efforts.

We will follow their story as we get news from them
